What does the free DTF artwork check look at?
The check runs ten tests that cover the file problems behind most bad DTF prints: resolution at your print size, background boxes, white halos, semi-transparent effects, thin lines and small text, loose specks, size on our 22.5 inch printable film, safe margins, file format, and how your colors read on your shirt color.
- Resolution. Real DPI at your print size, measured on the design itself.
- Background. White boxes and fake checkerboard transparency.
- Clean edges. White halos left by quick background removers.
- Semi-transparency. Glows and soft shadows that print blotchy.
- Small text and thin lines. Anything thinner than 0.02 in (0.5 mm) at print size.
- Specks and distress. Stray pixels and dots too small to hold powder.
- Size and film fit. Fits the 22.5 in printable width of our 24 in film.
- Safe margin. Art that runs into the edge of the canvas.
- File and format. JPEGs, unoutlined fonts, low-res images inside SVGs.
- Color on garment. Colors that disappear on your shirt color.
What DPI do you need for DTF transfers?
Aim for 300 DPI at the size you print. That means about 3,000 pixels across for a 10 inch wide print, 3,600 for 12 inches, and 1,200 for a 4 inch left-chest logo. Changing the DPI number in a file does not add detail; only the pixel count of the design itself matters.
The check measures the design, not the empty canvas around it, so a 4,000 pixel file with a small logo in the middle is flagged correctly. If a file is too small, it offers two choices: enlarge it, clearly labeled as estimated detail, or print it at a smaller size that keeps full quality.
Why does my DTF print have a white box around it?
DTF prints every pixel that is not fully transparent. A white or colored background in the file, or a checkerboard pattern saved into the image to look like transparency, prints as a solid box. JPEG files cannot be transparent at all. Save as PNG with a transparent background, or let the check remove it.
Fake checkerboards are common in artwork downloaded from image sites and in AI-generated images. The check spots both colors of the pattern and removes them where they touch the edge of the file, then shows you the result side by side before anything is saved.
What causes a white halo around a DTF transfer?
Quick background removers leave a thin ring of light, half-transparent pixels around the design. On a dark shirt that ring prints as a white outline, and adhesive powder sticks to it. The fix is to remove the leftover background color from the edge pixels and give the design a clean, hard edge.
How thin can lines and text be on a DTF transfer?
Keep lines and letter strokes at least 0.02 inch (0.5 mm) thick at the final print size. Thinner details may not hold adhesive powder, can break during pressing, and wash out sooner. Small text and fine distress textures are the usual cause. Thicken strokes slightly or print the design larger.
Can you check a gang sheet that is already built?
Yes. Drop a finished, transparent gang sheet into the Gang sheet tab. Each design is found, checked against all ten points and fixed with your OK, then put back in the same place. You can download the checked sheet and order with it.
What a finished sheet can't tell us
- Original resolution. Designs on a sheet are already resampled to the sheet's DPI, so a small file that was enlarged can look fine to the check. When quality matters, check single files.
- Where one design ends. Parts that touch are read as one design. You see the numbered boxes before the check starts and can adjust the join gap.
- Rearranging. If a fix makes a design bigger, we flag it. Re-spacing is done in the Gang Sheet Builder.
- Format and size. Sheets must be transparent PNGs up to about 22.5 × 49 in at 300 DPI. PDF sheets are not supported yet.
Is the artwork check free, and are my files uploaded?
The check is free with no sign-up and no limit. It runs entirely in your web browser, so your artwork never leaves your computer until you choose to order with it. If something can’t be fixed automatically, such as a photo with a busy background, the check tells you exactly what to change.
